Reclaiming Our Ancestors: The First Twelve Thousand Years of Abenaki History

By Ethan Allen Homestead Museum (other events)

10 Dates Through Jun 17, 2021

ABOUT ABOUT

Join author, filmmaker, activist and scholar Frederick M. Wiseman, PhD on a virtual journey through Vermont's marvelous prehistory, from the Early arrivals of Paleo-Indian big-game and marine mammal hunters during the waning of the Ice Age, to the intense environmental adaptations and societal complexities of the Archaic Period, to the arrival of new ideas and technologies from the South and West in the Woodland Period.  All of this complex legacy was disrupted and deflected by the arrival of European disease, technology and settlers.  This course is a third-generation update of an academic Wabanaki archaeology course taught since the 1990's, converted to an Indigenous perspective in early 2018 for teaching at the Missisquoi tribal headquarters.  The course will consist of stories, PowerPoint slide shows, videos and music.

In order to provide as many alternate ancestral voices as possible, the "Learning Circle" gatherings will consist of stories told, academic-style PowerPoint slide shows, hands on demonstrations of ancient technologies, movies by Wabanaki writers and producers, and Indigenous music video.

Due to the Great pandemic, the 2021 offering will be online only, with a prerecorded lecture posted to a virtual classroom for registered students the first week of the month, with a 6:00-8:00 live online topical discussion following on the third Thursday of the month.
